This project was for an upper division workshop course that required designing an animated explainer video with a minimum duration of 45 seconds. The focus was on communicating a clear and memorable message through animation, supported by illustration, typography, and layout. The chosen subject explained the mantis shrimp and its unique biological features, structured around an educational script. The assignment emphasized clarity, pacing, and design quality while avoiding reliance on templates or pre-made assets.
The project began with research into explainer videos, followed by writing a script long enough to support 45 seconds of animation while remaining concise. Thumbnail sketches were drafted and developed into a storyboard with more than 20 panels to map script lines to visual sequences. This storyboard established pacing, transitions, and points of visual emphasis that carried through to the final animation. During production, typography, illustrated graphics, and transitions were aligned with narration and background music, with multiple iterations on timing to ensure information was delivered at a clear, digestible pace. The final render at 1280 × 720 met course requirements and demonstrated how researched content could be transformed into a visually engaging, rhythmic, and educational animation.
